After dropping two games in a row to rivals New York and Washington, Indiana Fever coach Stephanie White knew she had to shake things up a bit.
The next game, the start of a two game road trip in Dallas, she put Erica Wheeler in the starting lineup. Wheeler started several games early in the season when Briann January was recovering from injury.
Wheeler has been an energizer, as the Fever not only won in Dallas, but yesterday afternoon went into Chicago on kids' day and defeated the Sky, 95-83.
The Fever offense just clicked, with Tamika Catchings and Erlana Larkins having big games, scoring 26 and 15, respectively, as Wheeler dished nine assists to be our Disher of the Night.
Her defensive pressure, intensity and quickness cannot be overlooked too, and the combination of the now healthy January and Wheeler racked up three steals and forced Sky point guard Courtney Vandersloot into committing five turnovers.
The Fever has a long history of taking players that were cast off from other teams and turning them into valuable contributors; Larkins, Jessica Breland, and Lynetta Kizer as examples. The ex-Rutgers guard Wheeler is just the latest example of the shrewd ability to judge talent by President Kelly Krauskopf and coach Stephanie White.
Congratulations to Disher of the Night Erica Wheeler!
