Much later than most assumed, the Phoenix Mercury finally picked up their first win of the season on Sunday, coming from behind to defeat the Washington Mystics, 93-77.
The Mercury trailed by ten in the first half before Diana Taurasi put the team on her back and changed their fortunes.
Taurasi dropped 20 of her 28 points in the second half, including 10 in a 23-7 run that turned the deficit into a lead.
She hit 10-of17 shots (58.8 percent) and 5-of-9 three-pointers (55.6 percent) to earn her second Swisher of the Night honors.
With a team featuring all-stars Brittney Griner, Candice Dupree, DeWanna Bonner and Penny Taylor along with Taurasi, Phoenix was picked by many, including the annual WNBA GM poll, to be a possible WNBA champion. However, they started the season poorly, dropping their first four games as they struggled to find some continuity and rhythm on both ends of the court.
It looked early like that would continue, with Washington leading a good portion of the first half before Phoenix turned things around.
Congratulations Diana Taurasi, or Swisher of the NIght for Sunday May 29th.
